Styling: The Lady Jacket
This tried-and-true silhouette has been around for decades and can be worn easily - but styling can play a huge part. People can shy away from it as it can look like grandma cosplay or too “buttoned-up.” I will refrain from calling it a “classic” because everyone’s view of this word is different. My goal is to get you to maybe view this style in a different way. I have this great piece in my closet from my grandmother from traditional brand St. John - I knew I could reinvent this in a cool way! The quality is already there and especially with the older pieces - this was made in the USA with Italian fabric in the 1980’s. Here are three ways to style this seemingly “stuffy” jacket!
LADY JACKET as a TOP
Easy and so comfortable - just button it up and go! I paired with dark Sézane cuffed denim and Marni laceless loafers to give it some edge and bring down the “precious” factor. A real lady had many facets after all!
LADY JACKET with a TEE + COTTON PANTS
Another insanely easy option - I paired it with my favorite Vince tee and Sézane Austin pants in soft brushed cotton and a paper-bag waist. I threw on some Adidas x Marimekko trainers and off I went to school-drop off. This added a little polish to the ensemble!
LADY JACKET with SILK + TROUSERS
The most predictable of styling options - dressing it up with its coordinating black knit pants, silk printed sheer Ralph Lauren top, and Aquazzura silk knotted mules. Just a little precious for a lunch at an upscale bistro or cocktails with friends in the evening.
BONUS: Add a color splash with a knit tied around your shoulders which is a scarf-not-a-scarf function!
I hope you can find some tips in here to repurpose a lady jacket style you might have in the back of your closet and gentle reminder you don’t need a “new” one!
