Styling: Three Ways to Style a Red Blazer
I often find a plethora of information on the internet about styling basics, ways to wear navy, and mixing and matching neutrals to maximize your closet. Everything is focused on ease and “not having to think about getting dressed.” But what if you had the right tips and tricks to reframe thinking about your wardrobe? Colors can be maximized, mixed, and worn many ways, too.
So many people love color, especially in Paris - red is a favorite choice for both men and women alike. I see it represented in outerwear, socks, bags, scarves, and throughout patterns. A little red makes the grey days of winter seem palatable! While a red little crossbody bag or a pair of red plaid socks are much easier to incorporate, I want to demonstrate a couple of ways to easily wear a more bold piece, like this Sézane Michelle blazer.
At the Musée Rodin’s Soirée Love for Valentine’s Day!
A lovely night outing for Valentine’s Day was a great opportunity to wear this great blazer I scored second hand from Sézane; it’s the Michelle style I really like. It’s medium weight, lined and great for layering. You can size up or down depending on the level of oversized look you want. I am wearing a 40 - it’s able to be nicely layered for me in this size. I have sheer tights, pointed booties, a knit skirt, and slightly metallic top all in black for this festive evening. The blazer itself becomes the outfit and the statement color against all the black textures; it might be the easiest way to wear red. I topped with a large scarf I folded into an easy triangle and draped over my shoulders. Voilà!
My new friend is great at taking outfit photos 😍
Mixing the three colors is easy.
The above outfit was a testimony to how warm it was that particular week in January - black, chocolate and this jacket made for an easy formula you can easily replicate. The chocolate sweater and accessories add some depth to black skinny jeans. It’s only a slight tweak from the all-black color palette from the Rodin photo that makes this daytime outfit have interest, as well. I love this red jacket as a solid “topper” like this instead of trying to incorporate some color in another way - it’s already an outfit by itself! Meeting a new friend for a coffee in the Marais and then later a working session required my large and quite durable vintage Gucci envelope bag - fits my iPad, notebook, and essentials! I have had this particular bag for 15+ years and has stood the test of wear and tear; it is one of my favorite eBay purchases.
Proportion play! And plaid!
Tan belt and boots warm up the cooler grey and black.
Finally, I grabbed this blazer to throw on over this neutrals-based outfit and incorporated a big plaid scarf. Denim, tan accessories, black t-shirt, and light grey long textured sweater all become harmonious and given that extra oomph with the addition of the red. I am always inspired by the women I see here consistently pushing the boundaries with color and texture. The takeaway I’m driving at is truly to not overthink - make a fun color like red (in your preferred shade, of course!) a staple in your wardrobe, because - why not? This could be easily packed for winter or spring in Paris. Life is too short, just wear the clothes!
